Keep in mind that people in the United States shell out an estimated 322 Billion dollars each year just for their diabetes needs. Today the largest U.S. pharmacy benefit manager, Express Scripts Holding Co, announced they will be implementing a program next year, March 1, 2017, that would cap each patients spending cost for their diabetes drug costs.
Diabetes Drug Cost Soar
Diabetes Drug costs soar on average 10 to 20 percent each year. The current per patient cost is $4,690 per year. Quite a hefty sum of money for the average patient, especially families with only one parent working. Express script is expected to cut the cost of increases significantly (by up to half) and increase the average medication adherence rate for enrolled patients by 5%. For many customers it will be a sigh of relief and clearly a step in the right direction.http://www.diabetesreversed.com/letter.php
For those not participating in this program, cost will likely increase 18 percent in 2016 and 2017.
“If they go over the cap, we’re on the hook dollar for dollar,” Glen Stettin, chief innovation officer at Express Scripts, said in a telephone interview.
Instead receiving 30-day supplies, members of the Express Script participating plans will be able to receive 90-day supplies of their diabetes maintenance medications from more than 10,000 pharmacies across the United States at walgreens pharmacies and other retail pharmacies.
