Can Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Prevent Diabetes?

Diabetes and Apple Cider Vinegar

The numbers of Americans who have Type II Diabetes are skyrocketing. The figures are expected to increase by another 50% over the next 25 years according to numbers from the (ADA) American Diabetes Association. But there is some good news about the effect of apple cider vinegar on those with pre-diabetes and Type II diabetes.

Diabetes Study and Blood Sugar

One study suggests drinking apple cider vinegar at bedtime may have a favorable impact on moderating blood sugar for those with Type II diabetes when waking up in the morning. The antiglycemic effect of acetic acid, the active ingredient in vinegar, has been attributed to reduced starch digestion and/or delayed gastric emptying. That’s very good news for those with diabetes, knowing that apple cider vinegar is so cheap and widely available. 

Arizona State University also conducted a study where subjects with type 2 diabetes consumed 20 grams apple cider vinegar and mixed it in 40 grams of water and 1 tsp of saccharine. This study showed that the vinegar raised the whole-body insulin sensitivity during the 60-min post meal interval in insulin-resistant subjects to 34% lower glucose.  So basically Apple cider vinegar causes blood sugar levels to decrease.

One thing to note about these studies is the number of people who participated in the samplings were very low.

    I have diabetes type 2 so may I take apple cider vinegar?

      Hi Hawa, you can do whatever you like. Apple cider vinegar certainly wont hurt. It is all natural with no side effects unless you count the bitter taste. I mix it with a tiny cup of water.
